Hong Kong - Tai O Fishing Village in Black and White

Tai O
It is one of my favorite places in Hong Kong. Supremely photogenic and colorful...but this time, I posted the pictures in black and white because.....................

...............I shot them in the wrong white balance and they were a pain in the ass to correct.

Oppps.

But if you love street and cultural photography, seafood, and need a little break from metropolitan Hong Kong, charge your camera battery, bring your favorite lens, use the correct white balance (ahem), and head to Tai O.

PS. I used Canon 7D + Canon 35mm f/2 for this trip

Here's how to get there:
Tai O Fishing Village, Lantau Island (Outlying Island)
1. Catch ferry from Central Pier 6 (MTR Hong Kong Station Exit E1. Walk through ifc mall) to Mui Wo, then bus 1 to Tai O.
or
2. MTR Tung Chung Station, then bus 11 from Tung Chung Town Centre.

Hong Kong Photography Spot for Night Shots

Photogs Uphill
I never realized there are sooo many photogs visiting this humble little hill, taking pictures of Hong Kong skyline. But, when I checked out what pictures they took, it all made sense.

I didn't know we can see IFC and BOC Tower from up here!
I never freaking know I could see IFC and Bank of China tower from here! I am sooo parking here to photograph the next fireworks. HAHAHA! No need to go to Central/TST no more!

Chinese New Year Fair 2011 - Victoria Park, Hong Kong

What else did we do during Chinese New Year holiday?
Every year, we brave the mad crowd and go to the Chinese New Year Fair in Victoria Park, Causeway Bay.
CNY 2011
This year was no exception.
Men, women, kids, babies...ready to spend some good money on super silly stuff, into the fair we went.

There were some seriously cute babies in fair, here's one of them.
CNY 2011
Hi, little bunny!

CNY 2011
She said "feel free to touch, it's ok if you don't buy".
"Go ahead, feel 'em"
We didn't want to. Heheh.

Ahhh...
CNY 2011
If only those were real, if only those are mine...(not the $10 coins, but I wouldn't mind them either. One million isn't one million if it's ten dollars short, right?

Lotsa Angry Birds inspired merchandise...
CNY 2011
...I sucked at the game, I wouldn't buy the bird.
I am a sore loser :D

CNY 2011
Ahem. Stay safe.

iPhone apps cushions...
CNY 2011
...they're sold at HK$100 each! WTH!
A facebook cushion would be cute though...

Like!
CNY 2011

Finally, something that's quite Chinese New Year-ish.
CNY 2011
I love them colors!

Cheap iPhone...HK$38 only!
CNY 2011
...and it's bigger!

Enough silliness, here's some beauty...as we walked through the Chinese New Year flower market section...
CNY 2011
...oh pretty-ness!

Gorgeous blossoms!
CNY 2011

Cute little tangerines...
CNY 2011

...I bet the vendors were pretty pissed off by these shameless photo-takers who didn't buy anything (ahem, I was one of them, the shameless photo-takers, I just went to the next level by taking photo of the photo-takers :D)
CNY 2011

Happy kids playing with their loot...I wanna be a kid again!
CNY 2011

We also went to Tsim Sha Tsui's harbour side to snap some tacky but festive Chinese New Year decor...
CNY 2011
...and to treat you to some fashion sightings.
Do you like the pose of the lady in pink behind us? Fierce, no?

...and final fashion sighting for you...
CNY 2011
China chic? You like?
How about the winged adidas, the chanel bag and the curly guy.
You dig?

Heheheh. Again, Kung Hey Fat Choy!
Stay Fab!

New Year's Eve 2010 - 2011 Fireworks Photo Hunting in Hong Kong

What did I do when the clock strikes 00:00:00 1-1-2011?
NYE 2010-2011 Fireworks Shooting
I went to Statue Square, Central, trying to photograph the fireworks display.
This was my first attempt, so I was pretty nervous.
What had I learnt about photographing fireworks? Well...let's just say that everything I learnt was from Professor Google ^_^
So, this is not a tutorial, I am just sharing how I did my shots ^_*
Share your tips, especially, tell me where I did wrong... T_T

Why Statue Square and not Tsim Sha Tsui harbour side?
Tsim Sha Tsui would be suicide :D
Statue Square wasn't crowded at all...although you can only see and shoot the fireworks up close and personal.

My setup:
Canon Eos 7D
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens
Wireless Remote Controller
El Cheapo Tripod
Sparkly Disco Camera Strap. Heheheh
Hong Kong New Year Eve Fireworks Photo Hunting
Hong Kong Fireworks New Year's Eve 2010 - 2011
f/18
exposure time: 4 sec
ISO 100

Hong Kong Fireworks New Year's Eve 2010 - 2011

f/18
exposure time: 7 sec
ISO 100

I used Canon 7D's B mode (Bulb) which allows me to control the shutter speed, and manual focus set to infinity, so that I didn't have to worry about changing focus points. I used wireless remote controller to "open" just before an "explosion" started and "close" the shutter after a few bursts of fireworks. It was not as hard as I imagined.

What did I wear?

NYE 2010-2011 Fireworks Shooting
Thrifted shirt, threadless photography tee, puffy pants (belt comes with), pink work boots and puffy jacket...and my Marc by Marc Jacobs baby bag to carry the tripod and Crumpler camera bag to carry the camera and lenses ^_^

Worried that I might have zero nice shots, I also asked SC to randomly take shots of the fireworks using Olympus EP-L1 and its kit lens. Simply using its night portrait mode and good luck.
He took some gorgeous shots! Even better than the ones from 7D! Why did I even bother? ^_^'
Hong Kong Fireworks New Year's Eve 2010 - 2011
Woohoo~!

After a while, SC asked if he could stop shooting.
He wanted to enjoy the fireworks and not worrying about photography.
Hong Kong Fireworks New Year's Eve 2010 - 2011
Good point.
Sometimes we forget about that.

What did SC wear?
NYE 2010-2011 Fireworks Shooting
Uniqlo plaid shirt, Uniqlo Monster Hunter tee (Quest Clear), Zara puffy jacket, my gray skinny jeans, Salem boots and my H&M bowler's hat.

When else could we sit in the middle of the road in Central? ;)

Since our exhibitionist asses just had to upload some pictures immediately...SC also took some pictures using iPhone4 HDR mode.
Hong Kong New Year Eve Fireworks Photo Hunting
...and it's not bad at all.

Most importantly, we got to spend new year's eve together and had a blast photographing the fireworks.
Happy new year 2011 from Hong Kong and its tiny fireworks display~!
